Working in the Creative Industry

The creative industries continue to evolve, and while there is now a greater understanding of the impact that working in film, television and fashion can have on mental health, there is still work to be done. Too often, emotional wellbeing is deprioritised until things feel unmanageable. My belief is that mental health deserves the same ongoing care and attention as physical health.

My work with people in the creative industries has developed over many years and continues to evolve alongside the changing realities of these working environments.
Before training as a counsellor and psychotherapist, I spent over 15 years working as a model agent and was also regularly exposed to the realities of life in film and television. The Snug is my private practice, where I bring together my clinical training with a deep, practical understanding of the creative working environment and the particular pressures faced by those working both in front of and behind the camera.

At different points in our lives, many of us need support to make sense of what is happening internally, particularly when external demands are high. This has long felt especially relevant within the creative industries, where uncertainty, visibility, competition and financial instability are often part of the landscape.

The Snug offers one-to-one counselling and psychotherapy, either face to face or online. As an integrative therapist, I adapt my approach to each individual, offering a safe, non-judgemental space in which you can explore your experiences and find your own way forward.

In front of the camera

Therapy is a very personal experience and, for many, careers in  acting, modelling or the music industry can appear exciting and glamorous from the outside. From my own professional experience, I know that this rarely reflects the whole picture.

My work with people in front of the camera has shown me how much pressure can sit beneath the surface. My role is to offer a confidential, safe, non-judgemental space where you can explore what is going on in your life and develop tools to help you manage difficult or overwhelming emotions.

I work integratively, drawing on a range of therapeutic approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), psychodynamic, person-centred and mindfulness-based work. This allows the therapy to be shaped around your individual needs, rather than you adapting to therapy.

Working in front of the camera often involves intense scrutiny, pressure around success and appearance, financial uncertainty, and an industry that can feel unpredictable or unforgiving. Social media, external expectations and self-criticism can further intensify feelings of vulnerability or self-doubt. Talking therapy can offer a space to slow things down, reflect, and reconnect with yourself beyond the demands of the industry.

Behind the camera

While working in film, fashion and entertainment can be creative, stimulating and rewarding, it also brings its own set of challenges. Through my work, I have seen how long hours, freelance working, time away from home and irregular schedules can place significant strain on mental health and relationships, often leading to burnout.

For those working behind the scenes including agents, and those supporting others’ careers the pressure can feel relentless. Holding responsibility for clients, talent, employers and outcomes, while rarely having space to attend to your own needs, can become exhausting over time.

In an industry that often normalises overwork and emotional resilience, it can be difficult to recognise when things are becoming too much. Therapy can offer a space to step back, reflect, and begin to prioritise your own wellbeing. Speaking openly about how you are feeling can be an important first step towards change.

How can I help

Sometimes we all need a little help to make sense of what is going on in our lives and to find ways of coping when things start to feel difficult or overwhelming.

My job is to create a space where you have the freedom to explore those feelings, and together work towards better emotional health.

Some of the areas I work in and people come and see me for:

  • Anxiety, stress and general worry
  • Depression, low mood and emotional exhaustion
  • Pressure, burnout and overwhelm
  • Social media, visibility and body image
  • Loneliness, isolation and feeling stuck
  • Low self-esteem, confidence and self-doubt
  • Anger, bullying and difficult workplace dynamics
  • Relationships, attachment and separation anxiety
  • Social anxiety and work-related anxiety
  • Perfectionism and fear of failure
  • Rejection, criticism and imposter syndrome
  • Identity, sense of self and self-worth

What to expect

Phone

The first step is to text me on 07715 296741 or email me at kimvond@hotmail.co.uk . I will get back to you within 24 hours to arrange a mutually convenient time to speak over the phone.

Talk

I offer a free 20-minute telephone appointment at a time suitable for both of us, to have an informal chat about how counselling works. This is an opportunity to find out a little bit of information about each other and for you to ask any questions you may have. We can then arrange a mutually convenient time for our initial consultation, and I will then email you a client consultation form to fill in and return prior to our initial meeting.

Initial Consultation

This is an opportunity to talk about why you think you need therapy. We explore these feelings and take the time to discuss what has been going on in your life. This will be the first time we have met, so whilst it is important to bring as much as you can in terms of yourself to the session, I always keep in mind that we do not know each other yet and the therapeutic relationship will organically happen over time. The key at this stage is for me to create an environment of trust from the start.

This initial meeting allows you to ask anything about me and my approach, you may come with a list of questions, or you may feel that you just want a chat at this point – you are a blank canvas.  I will have sent you a client consultation form which you will have returned, and we will go through that together. After this initial consultation, I will email you with my thoughts and if you choose to go ahead and I feel I am able to offer you effective therapeutic support and that my approach is going to be useful to you, we will arrange our first counselling session together.

Counselling Sessions

Normally I would advise that these take place once a week on the same day at the same time if possible. The reason for this is that it lowers the stress around attending therapy, creates often much needed stability and trust, and gives you more energy and attention for what really matters. However, I understand that this may not always be possible with work often coming in at the last minute and long unpredictable hours, so I am happy to be more flexible.

I practise on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 9am to 6pm (if on location or abroad I am happy to work with your schedule)

All sessions are either face to face or via Zoom, and last 50 minutes (please refer to rates).
